SPEARS OF DESTINY
"Harrow! On, hounds! On, hounds!Take him, dogs! Out, harrow!"
The aisles of Crowden Wood rang to the clamour ofvoices and the belling of shaggy hounds. Through thebudding foliage of beech and oak and ash the springsunlight streamed upon the leaf-brown mould thatfloored a winding ride. Around one end of this leafytunnel scampered a fox, nose close to the ground, brushheld high. His pink tongue dripped over slaveringjaws and his little eyes were very bright, but his stridewas tireless. One look he cast over his shoulder ashe turned the corner—and as he saw the leading houndsleap into view, he stretched his pace until he seemed ared shadow flickering through the golden-greens ofsunshine and foliage.
"Harrow! Harrow!"
