Introduction

Four sturdy young members of the ContinentalArmy are the chief characters in thisstory. Ben Cooper and Nat Brewster werefrom Pennsylvania. Ezra Prentiss and histwin brother George were from Massachusetts.“The Young Continentals at Lexington,” thefirst book of the series, was chiefly concernedwith the adventures of Nat Brewster, althoughall of the four had a part in the stirring eventsin and around Boston at the beginning of thestruggle for the independence of the AmericanColonies. They were all employed as couriersattached to headquarters, and carried messagesfor Warren and Putnam, and later forthe great general-in-chief, Washington. Thesecond story, “The Young Continentals atBunker Hill,” told of the part played by EzraPrentiss, assisted by his friends, and the thirdstory, “The Young Continentals at Trenton,”described some of the good services renderedby George Prentiss. This book tells the story[4]of Ben Cooper at Princeton and in the darkperiod of Brandywine and Valley Forge, andends with the victory at Monmouth, whenWashington overcame not only his openenemies, but “they of his own household.”

All four books are true pictures of the dayswhen even boys showed that they could begood patriots, and set an example of loyal, modest, faithful service that thousands ofAmerican boys are still glad to follow.
