This dictionary uses letters with Unicode combiningdiacritics, such as ā́, an a with a macron and an acuteaccent. These may not render correctly on older browsers, resulting inthe top-most accent being placed over the next letter.
The Southeast Asia Program was organized at CornellUniversity in the Department of Far Eastern Studies in 1950. It is ateaching and research program of interdisciplinary studies in thehumanities, social sciences, and some natural sciences. It deals withSoutheast Asia as a region, and with the individual countries of thearea: Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, thePhilippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The activities of the Program are carried on both at Cornell and inSoutheast Asia. They include an undergraduate and graduate curriculumat Cornell which provides instruction by specialists in Southeast Asiancultural history and present-day affairs and offers intensive trainingin each of the major languages of the area. The Program sponsors groupresearch projects on Thailand, on Indonesia, on the Philippines, and onthe area’s Chinese minorities. At the same time, individual staffand students of the Program have done field research in every SoutheastAsian country.
