11 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David,the son of Abraham:2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, andJacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perezand Zerah by Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father ofRam, 4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father ofNahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 Salmon the father of Boazby Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse,6 and Jesse the father of King David.David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, andAbijah the father of Asa, 8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat thefather of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 Uzziah the father ofJotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, andAmon the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and hisbrothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.12 And after the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father ofShealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 Zerubbabel the fatherof Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim thefather of Eliud, 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father ofMatthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father ofJoseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is calledChrist.17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteengenerations, and from David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations,and from the exile to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way: whenhis mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, shewas found to be with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph herhusband, being a just man, and not wanting to put her to public shame,was resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered this, behold,an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son ofDavid, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for that which isconceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will give birth to a son,and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from theirsins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by theprophet:23"Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,and they shall call his name Immanuel,"which means, "God with us." 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did asthe angel of the Lord commanded him and took his wife, 25 but did notknow her until she had borne a son. And he called his name Jesus.21 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days ofHerod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we haveseen his star in the East and have come to worship him." 3 When Herodthe king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 Andwhen he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the peopletogether, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 So theysaid to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:6'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;for out of you shall come a rulerwho will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'"7 Then Herod called the wise men secretly and determined fromthem what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehemand said, "Go and search diligently for the young child, and when youhave found him, bring back word to me, so that I too may come andworship him." 9 When they had heard
