PREFACE

The writer of this book went to North Russiaas a Y.M.C.A. secretary assigned to work withthe army, landing at Murmansk just beforeThanksgiving, 1918. I reached ArchangelDecember first and was sent at once to Shenkurskand Ustpadenga, the southernmost points ofthe expedition. I was in charge of the Y.M.C.A. workfor the Vaga column until June first whenI went to Yemetskoye and later to Archangelwith the departing American troops. As theBritish Y.M.C.A. was not prepared to take overall the work at that time several Americansremained with the British and Russian armies. Asone of these I returned south to Berezniki Julyfirst. On August first I was made responsiblefor the evacuation of the entire AlliedY.M.C.A. personnel, supplies, and equipment from theforward Dvina and Vaga areas. This enabledme to be the last American to leave. I returnedto Archangel August thirtieth and sailed withthe last of the embassies, consulates, militarymissions, etc., on September second.

This book does not assume to tell the wholestory of that expedition. I did not see all of it.No man did. In addition to what I saw, however, I had the advantage of meeting constantlymen who had seen and been in the various otherfights and locations. Under the overstimulatingcircumstances of army life the very airseems full of wild rumors. This was particularlytrue in the isolations of the Russian fighting.I have felt the necessity therefore ofexercising great care not to accept as trueuncorroborated army rumors. The matters of chiefinterest in this book, moreover, are matters ofmy own person
