INTRODUCTION

I happen to frequent Captain Berkeley’scompany on the cricket field. When he isthere, and the wicket is bumpy, it mightsuitably be called a stricken field. He bowlsvery fast and very straight.

As his publisher usually keeps wicket for him,I dare not suggest that the crooked ones go forfour byes. In any event that parallel would notbe necessary here; but the general characteristicsof Captain Berkeley’s bowling are certainly inevidence. He goes direct at his object, andwhen he hits it the middle stump whirls rapidlyin the air.
