PREFATORY NOTE.

It might have been expected that the Indians ofNorth America would have many Folklore talesto tell, and in this volume I have endeavoured topresent such of them as seemed to me to bestillustrate the primitive character and beliefs ofthe people. The belief, and the language inwhich it is clothed, are often very beautiful.Fantastic imagination, magnanimity, moral sentiment, tender feeling, and humour are discoveredin a degree which may astonish many who havebeen apt to imagine that advanced civilisationhas much to do with the possession of suchqualities. I know of nothing that throws somuch light upon Indian character as theirFolk-tales.
