Preface

It is with extreme diffidence that the authorpresents—but then is any healthy author everreally as modest as he makes himself out in hisforeword? Probably not, or there wouldn't beany book. The author, however, is quiteconscious of the many defects of these sketches, andonly hopes that in book form they will meetwith the indulgence which greeted theiroriginal appearance. They have been gatheredfrom the pages of Toronto Saturday Night andare here reprinted, through the courtesy of thepublisher and editor, with such additions andalterations as have been suggested by theincreasing years and wisdom of the writer—andthe removal of the censorship. And they arededicated to those two splendid and long-sufferingfriends, "Constant Reader" and "Old Subscriber,"by their very grateful liegeman, theauthor.

PETER DONOVAN.
