PREFACE.

A portion of this work appeared, some monthsago, in papers in the People's Journal. Theappearance of these papers was suspended bythe change in the affairs of that Journal. Fromthat time to the present, applications have beenmade to me at intervals, to request me to finishmy subject. In deference to these requests, Ihave completed my original design. For itssuggestion, I am indebted to Mr. Saunders, thelate editor of the People's Journal.
