Preface

This book is the first attempt which has been madeto write a connected history of the City of Auckland.Although in years the city is comparativelyyoung, many of the events which have markedits progress have already been forgotten. Swainson,no period of Auckland’s history has been adequatelydealt with. The lack of information hasmade the task of writing a history a difficult one,and may account for the fact that none has hithertobeen essayed.
