Translator’s Preface

Among all the numerous life stories writtenby Ferdinand Schmidt for the delectationand education of German youth, none surpassesthat of Washington. The authorhas condensed his material, drawn from the mostauthoritative sources, in a masterly manner, and presentsit in a very attractive form. He has accompaniedit by moralization which is pertinent, butnever becomes tedious. It is questionable, indeed, whether any story of Washington’s life written foryoung people excels Schmidt’s in accuracy, conciseness, and general interest. As such this sketch of theFather of his Country from a German point of view iscommended to American youth.
