PREFACE

In preparing these volumes, it has been my aimto give a clear and fairly complete account of thearts and crafts of older Spain. It seems to methat there is room for a work of this design andscope, and that there is no reason why so attractivea subject—or rather, group of subjects—shouldbe perpetually ignored by persons who travelthrough, or who profess to feel an interest in,the country of the Cid and of Don Quixote.

My account of Spanish pottery is guarded, andyet I trust acceptable. The study of this craft inSpain is far from definite, and fresh researchesand discoveries may be hoped for at some futuretime. The history of Spanish arms has alsosuffered from unjust neglect. Perhaps my sketchof them may slightly compensate for this deficiency.For the rest, my book, which representsthe well-meant assiduity of several years, shallspeak for itself.

Although I was embarrassed by too much[viii]material, the illustrations have been chosen withgreat care, and not, I think, inadequately. Someof the photographs were taken specially for thiswork.
