PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION

It cannot be urged against this work that it travelsalong a path already well worn, for the subject oftrees and shrubs for English gardens, though almostinexhaustible, has never been so fully treated andillustrated as it deserves. The book may have manydefects, but its pages will show that an honesteffort has been made to offer helpful and instructiveinformation to the many who wish to know more ofthe beauty of trees and shrubs.

In writing this book, the labour of my spare hoursfor many months, I have been greatly helped byMr. Bean, the assistant-curator of the Royal Gardens,Kew, whose deep knowledge of the subject has beenwillingly imparted; and by Miss Jekyll, to whom Iam indebted for many valuable suggestions andnotes. Among others to whom grateful thanks aretendered are Mrs. Davidson, Mr. J. Clark, Mr.Dallimore, and Mr. S. W. Fitzherbert.

Some of the chapters have already appeared inthe Garden, with the object of making known aswidely as possible the importance of the most beautifultrees and shrubs for English woodland andpleasure-grounds.

The illustrations will show how a shrub, so oftenstunted and mutilated by unwise pruning, becomesbeautiful when allowed to develop naturally.
