MYObject in this Editionof Mr. Calef's Work issimilar to that in Dr.Mather's in the precedingVolume, namely, to givea perfectly accurate Reprintof the Work; so that whoever hasOccasion to use or consult it may do sowith entire Confidence. I have thereforereprinted the original Edition of1700, with such Notes as was judgedmight be useful to a certain Class ofReaders. And having mentioned theNotes, I will say of them here all Ihave to say about them. There may bethose who have no need of such Additions.They can pass them by unheeded;vibut it was thought generally that a few Explanationsand Additions would be a Helpto the Party consulting the Work. Theyhave been made as brief as was thoughtconsistent with the Subject.

With respect to the original Text, it isgiven as exactly like the Original as amuch better Type can be made to imitatean old Type of 166 Years ago. As toretaining all the Errors in the originalEdition, it was thought incompatible withthe general good Taste of the Age.Some, of a peculiar Nature, if judgednecessary to show a Peculiarity of theTimes, may have been retained, andnoted for such Peculiarity; but a brokenor imperfect Letter is discarded as unworthyof Imitation; so transposed orinverted Letters are set right, as any goodproof Reade
