THE SECOND BOOK OF ARTEMAS

CHAPTER I.

Artemas writeth again. 3Concerning a journey. 7And the things that he didlearn. 13 One confesseth asecret. 17 And impartethit. 20 His mendacitycondemneth him. 22 Thescribe revealeth himself.

The words of Artemasof the scribesthat were in Lon in theland of En, being thosewords that he did writehim also;

Of the things thatwere and of the thingsthat were to be:concerning men and thethings that men did do.

¶ Now it came topass on an occasion thatI, being Artemas, thescribe, did journey in acertain carriage untothe city of Lon.

And it was a carriagethat was full of amultitude, such beingthe wont in those days,so that I did perforcestand me up on my feet.

And, behold, therewas a man; and he didsit upon my right hand. And there was anotherman also; and he didsit upon my left hand.

And they did holdspeech, the one with theother. Yea, even as Istood up between themdid they speak familiarlyacross me.

¶ Wherefore I didlearn many thingsconcerning them, andconcerning the course ofthe war, and concerningthe rulers of the land,

And concerning thewives of the rulers andtheir children also, andconcerning the moneythat they were possessedof, and concerning theirwickedness in secretplaces.

And after I hadheard many things thatamazed me mightily, then he that was uponmy left hand, he didspeak unto the other,

And he did sayunto him, What thinkestthou concerning theBook that is of Artemas?

And he that wasupon my right hand, hedid wriggle him aboutin strange ways.

And after that hewas wriggled aboutsufficiently, then did hemake answer and he didsay,

¶ Speak not untome concerning thatBook, for I have areason. Also, it is asecret.

And I did opemine ears full wide forto hear, notwithstandingthat he was thatmanner of man thatexpoundeth nought saveonly the things that besecret.

And he did sayunto his friend,Nevertheless, because thouhast an open countenanceand art, moreover, that man whommy soul loveth,

Therefore dostthou prevail upon me toimpart unto thee thatwhich thou shalt tellunto no man.

¶ For I, even I,am he that did write theBook that is of Artemas.

Yea, notwithstandingthat thouknowest me only as onethat vendeth choicemeats, nevertheless I didwrite me also that Bookwhich is inscribed unto Eve.
