PREFACE

These Essays appeared originally in The WestminsterGazette, and have only been so far modifiedhere as is necessary for purposes of volumepublication. They aim at being suggestive ratherthan exhaustive: I shall be satisfied if I haveprovoked thought without following out each trainto a logical conclusion. Most of the Essays arejust what they pretend to be—crystallisations intowriting of ideas suggested in familiar conversation.
