PREFACE

These lectures have been given perhapshalf a dozen times, in England, in Switzerlandand in Germany. On allowing them toappear in print I should perhaps apologizeto my readers for the somewhat free andfamiliar style in which parts of them arewritten; but even if I had the time to recastthem into a more serious form I should beunwilling to do so, for there is surely enoughponderous literature on the subject, andalthough some may resent in a book whatoften helps to make a lecture attractive, Ithink I can rely on the fact that manypeople agree with the dictum of Horace:

Ridiculum aeri
Fortius et melius magnas plerumque secat res,

or, as Milton has it:

Joking decides great things
Stronger and better oft than earnest can.

Almost the only change that I have madein my MS. has been the substitution or[6]addition of an English translation innumerous places where I had formerlyquoted the German original. On someoccasions, when first writing the lectures,I very probably used the English versionof Faust by Bayard Taylor, but I have notthe book at present at hand and cannot feelquite certain whether any of the versetranslations are not my own. The littlebook makes of course no pretence to bea contribution to critical or biographicalliterature. It is meant especially for thosewho wish to know something more aboutthe story of Faust and about Goethe'splay, and who, because their knowledge ofGerman does not suffice or for other reasons, are unable to study the subject in any moresatisfactory way.
