In so far as these pages reflect the thoughts of abusy stockbroker, distracted by many duties andlacking in literary skill, they have but littlemerit and the writer entertains no illusions regardingthem. But in the many quotations from thewritings of the world’s foremost economists thatare here presented, and in the various legal andhistorical precedents cited, perhaps it is not toomuch to hope that this book possesses some slightvalue as a contribution to the vexed and vexingdiscussion of the Stock Exchange, and that itmay serve in some degree both to dull the sharpedge of uninformed criticism and to strengthenthe hands and hearts of loyal friends of a greatlymisunderstood institution. The public is askedto disregard the utterances of demagogues andself-seekers and to consider facts. That done, theAmerican spirit of fair play may be confidentlyrelied upon.
The Stock Exchange authorities have had nohand in the preparation of the work, nor does itbear their endorsement. I say this lest it bethought an official apologia. Had it been such, the work would have been much more skillfullydone, and its value greatly enhanced.
