The Colver lectureship is provided by afund of $10,000 presented to the Universityby Mr. and Mrs. Jesse L. Rosenbergerof Chicago in memory of Mrs. Rosenberger’sfather, Charles K. Colver of the class of 1842.The following sentences from the letter accompanyingthe gift explain the purposes ofthe foundation:—
“It is desired that, so far as possible, forthese lectures only subjects of particular importanceand lecturers eminent in scholarshipor of other marked qualifications shall bechosen. It is desired that the lectures shallbe distinctive and valuable contributions tohuman knowledge, known for their qualityrather than their number. Income, or portionsof income, not used for lectures may be usedfor the publication of any of the lecturesdeemed desirable to be so published.”
Charles Kendrick Colver (1821-1896) wasa graduate of Brown University of the classof 1842. The necrologist of the Universitywrote of him: “He was distinguished for hisbroad and accurate scholarship, his unswervingpersonal integrity, championship of truth, andobedience to God in his daily life. He wasseverely simple and unworldly in character.”
