THIS is a story of the initial cruiseof "Sometub"—a narrative of thevoyage of the newest type boat onAmerica's oldest improved waterway. We exalted 30 cent gasolineand eased our conscience by followingin the patriotic footsteps ofGeorge Washington.
Amid nature's most magnificentscenery we linked the romance ofyesterday with the humdrum of theworkaday present. We establisheda new maxim, namely: To avoid thebeaten path take the towpath!
We enjoyed to the superlative degreethe rare privilege of "Seeing America First," becausewe saw it as the first American saw it.
THE cruise of the "Sometub" beganat Oakmont on the Allegheny riverin Pennsylvania and ended in RockCreek in the shadow of the nationalcapitol in the District of Columbia. In a total distance of 347 miles thelittle craft traversed six navigablewaterways. Of course, there was aportage of 150 miles, but this wasaccomplished without inconvenience and provided a seasonableperiod to re-provision the boat. Moreover, the150-mile trip overland demonstrated the advantage of aportable cruiser—of which "Sometub" has the distinctionof being the first in its class.
