The Doctor, his Wife,
and the Clock.
I.
On the 17th of July, 1851, atragedy of no little interestoccurred in one of the residencesof the Colonnade in LafayettePlace.
Mr. Hasbrouck, a well-knownand highly respected citizen, wasattacked in his room by an unknownassailant, and shot deadbefore assistance could reach him.His murderer escaped, and theproblem offered to the police was,how to identify this person who,by some happy chance or by the[4]exercise of the most remarkableforethought, had left no traces behindhim, or any clue by whichhe could be followed.
The affair was given to a youngman, named Ebenezer Gryce, toinvestigate, and the story, as hetells it, is this:
When, some time after midnight,I reached Lafayette Place,I found the block lighted fromend to end. Groups of excitedmen and women peered from theopen doorways, and mingled theirshadows with those of the hugepillars which adorn the front ofthis picturesque block of dwellings.
