We have very little doubt that theGerman newspapers are publishingphotographs of WhitbyAbbey, and claiming the entirecredit for its ruined condition.


It remained for The Timesto chronicle the Germans' mostastounding feat. It happenedat Hartlepool. "A chimneynearly 200 feet in height, onthe North-Eastern Railwayhydraulic power-station, was,"our contemporary tells us,"grazed by a projectile about100 yards above its base."


The Archbishop of York,who was one of the Kaiser'sfew apologists, is said to feelkeenly that potentate's ingratitudein selecting for bombardmenttwo unprotected bathing-placesin his Grace's diocese.


It is widely rumoured thatWilhelm is conferring aspecial medal on the perpetratorsof this and similar outrages,to be called the Kaiser-ye-Hunmedal.

A message from Amsterdam saysthat there are signs in Berlin ofdiscontent with the German Chancellorand his staff, and patriots are callingfor a "clean sweep." The difficulty,of course, is that, while there areplenty of sweeps in Germany, it is noteasy to find a clean one.


"Immediately after his arrival atRome," says The Liverpool Echo,"Prince Buelow proceeded to the VillaMalte, his usual residence at Rome,where he will stay until he takes uphis quarters at the Caffarelli police."Our alleged harsh treatment of aliensfades into insignificance by the side ofthis!


General Baron von Bissing, theGovernor-General of Belgium, has informeda German journal that theKaiser has "very specially commandedhim to help the weak and oppressedin Belgium." By whom, we wonder,are the Belgians being oppressed?

The same journal announces thatGeneral von Diedenhofen, the commanderat Karlsruhe, has issued aproclamation expressing his "indignationat the dishonourable conduct"of three German Red-Cross Nurses whohave married wounded French prisoners.It certainly does look like taking advantageof the poor fellows when they weremore or less helpless.


We hear that considerable ill-feelinghas been caused in certain quarters ofParis by a thoughtless English newspapercalling the Germans "the Apachesof Europe."


A German critic has been expatiatingon the trouble we must have in feedingan Army with so many different tastesan
