CHAPTER I.

2 Of the things thatwere and of the thingsthat were to be:concerning men and thethings that men did do.

3 ¶ Now there waspeace over all the landof Eur and amongst allthe nations that abodethere, it was a time ofgreat content.

4 ¶ But Willi, whoruled over the men ofHu, was a crafty manand greedy, and hisways were devious.

5 And when hebeheld the prosperity ofthe land and theindustry of those that dweltround about, and thatthey did live in peace,the one with the other,his heart grew blackwithin him and his soulvomited envy.

6 Moreover, he was aproud man and ambitiouswithal. His covetousnesswas like unto atree, that being plantedin fertile ground,flourisheth mightily; and theindependence of thepeoples was as gall untohis vanity.

7 ¶ Now the son ofWilli was a young man,and he was puffed outwith pride and his mindwas empty; in hisliving, he was vicious, andhis name, it was Mud.

8 And when Mud sawthat his father's soulwas torn with theviolence of his envy andthat he coveted thatwhich was not his, itrejoiced him exceedingly.

9 ¶ And he laidhimself out to entice hisfather, and did speakmany specious wordsunto him, and was forever at him.

10 And Mud saidunto his father, AllHighest, hail! And Willianswered him, saying,Thou art my son: AndMud said unto him,Great art thou above allthe kings of the earth,for thou hast served theLord faithfully throughoutthe days of thy life.

11 And Willianswered him, saying,Verily have I foundfavour in the sight of theLord; and in my sighthas the Lord also foundfavour.

12 And Mud lookedupon his father fromthe side; he gazed uponhis countenance with afurtive look, and did seethat his father's vanitywas without bounds. Sohe spake unto himagain, saying,

13 Thy shadow is asthe sun whose raysbring forth warmth,giving life unto all themthat are beneath it.

14 And Willi said,That which thou sayestis indeed true; yet doththe sun shine over allthe world whilst myshadow
