PREFACE.

The present work has been written in order thatstudents may gain by its perusal some idea of themethods and scope of Stratigraphical Geology. I believethat this idea can be obtained most satisfactorily, if alarge number of the details connected with the study ofthe stratified rocks are omitted, and I have accordinglygiven very brief accounts of the strata of the differentSystems.

The work is intended for use in conjunction with anybook which treats of the strata of the Geological Columnat considerable length; some of these books are mentionedon pages 124, 125.
