Preface
This story is written more or less on the same lines asmy previous story of naval adventures—Mr. MidshipmanGlover, R.M.—and describes events subsequent to thosenarrated in that book.
The proof sheets have been carefully read by messmatesof different branches of the Service, and I am muchindebted to them for correcting many technical errors.
Practically all the characters are drawn from life, andthe cruisers and gunboats, British, American, and Chinese, taking part in the various operations are actual shipsunder altered names.
I therefore hope that the story gives an accuraterepresentation of life in the Service under the war conditionsdescribed.
